Welcome back, lovely readers, and welcome for the first time to any newcomers! This week, I decided to stray from my usual DIY path a little bit. I was doing some yard work with my dad on Saturday and while he was splitting some logs from an old mulberry tree he cut down, I had one of those “epiphany” moments. It’s a huge trend right now to have rustic-looking log decor in your home, and here I have this giant pile of logs right in my backyard! Now, you could spend $15 for a craft-store slice of wood or even hundreds for natural looking log furniture, but why do that when you’re likely to have the resources to make it in your own backyard? I browsed through Pinterest and sure enough, there are tons of simple DIY projects to utilize your pile of wood! I know how much people of the internet love lists, so I’ve created one here for 7 of my favorite ideas (in no particular order).
1. Wood-Slice Chalkboards
This project is perfect for home decor but also a beautiful idea for weddings and events. While the source used store-bought wood slices, you can easily saw one off of a log and sand it to be smooth before painting it with chalkboard paint.
2. Stump End Table
I’ve always been in awe when I see these kinds of things. Who would have ever thought to take an old stump and turn it into this beauty? West Elm sells a version of this for – get this – $250! But if you follow the steps from the source above, you can make yourself a much more afforadble version.
3. Tree Branch Candle Holders
How cute are these birch candle holders? They’re warm and rustic – perfect for the fall and winter. I can just imagine a few on our dining table with the Christmas tree in the background. Okay, okay, it’s May. I should not be getting excited about winter in Michigan already – it just ended! But these are still a favorite of mine nonetheless.
4. Drink Coasters
Alright friends, I have a confession to make. This whole post came to my mind because I actually took one of the perfectly-round logs from our wood pile and sliced a few chunks off with my miter saw with the intent to make some coasters. Once I sand and seal them, they will be just like the ones in the photo above! Follow the source’s steps to make your own – they are super quick and really cute!
5. Garden Pathway
This garden path is honestly my absolute favorite out of any of these projects. The way the source used these slices like tile in their garden makes it feel like something out of a story book, doesn’t it? I’m tucking this one away in my “Future Home Inspiration” memory bank.
6. Cutting Board
I don’t know about you, but as far as cutting boards go, this is probably one of the prettiest I’ve seen. That may not be saying a lot as all of ours are made of hard plastic, but I’d say it’s pretty spot-on. With a log, a chain saw, and a little elbow grease, the source created this beautiful piece of kitchen artwork. I’d love to have one of these on my counter!
7. Wood Slice Wreath
For those of us who love to decorate according to the season, this project is seriously perfect. It’s so easy to change the accents on the wreath to match any season’s trend! The source has all the steps listed to make one of these for your front door. It’s so pretty that the neighbors may be asking for one, too!
With all of these incredible options for creating and decorating, your wood pile might just be looking at a future beyond the fire pit. What’s better than free building materials right from your backyard? In the DIY world, nothing could be better than that.
